Yesterday, work took me from New York to Philly for the day. Armed with a map, detailed instructions I was confident that I would not get lost. Now as much as I hate to admit it, I have no sense of direction, overlay that with Americans’ predilection for directions, that involve head north, then go west, means that I always get lost. Maybe it’s because I am a small town girl from High Wycombe, England, but I got lost when I lived there too!
It took me a while to admit that I was in fact lost in Philly. After a few moments, I had the brainwave, why don’t you ask [...]

“We are all guilty of diagnosis momentum, despite incomplete evidence we heard the word cancer and we all ran down the wrong path.” – Dr. Dubenko, ER

I would agree with Dr. Dubenko, in that they all ran down the wrong path, however they were presented with compelling information, medical records and diagnoses from several doctors, that unanimously suggested cancer. So at first glance the information seemed pretty complete. Diagnosis momentum is the tendency for a doctor when presented with a case to accept and stick with the initial doctor’s diagnosis.
There are many scenarios in the workplace, where one is required to draw a conclusion or make a recommendation based on [...]

A couple of weeks ago, I discussed how career shocks influenced our leadership development and prepared us to lead in a variety of different situations. It can be exhilarating and overwhelming, when you are tapped to lead a new start-up internally, or contemplating flying solo as an entrepreneur. If you are in this situation, you will find yourself consumed with many questions such as where do I start and how do I move forward quickly?

FedEx is ranked one of the top 100 best companies to work for, it has a no-layoff philosophy, offers health insurance to retirees and part-timers, and promotes from within (90% of FedEx Express managers worked their [...]

The late Paul Arden said “Your vision of where or who you want to be is the greatest asset you have. Without having a goal it’s difficult to score.” We know our personal fulfillment and purpose comes from achieving our goals. So as Q3 comes to a close, how are you doing on the goal front this year? Take a few minutes to reflect on the following:_

What was your vision for this year?
How closely is it aligned with where you are today?
Specifically, what do you need to accomplish this year to make your vision a reality?
Are you on track with your accomplishments?
If you are, what success factors have helped you [...]

As I mentioned in Are You Coasting?, I have started to work out again. Most of the time, I think my trainer is trying to kill me but she kindly tells me that she is shocking my body to transform it. In the beginning I would protest, but I have to admit I am starting to see results.
Career shocks serve the same purpose in your professional development, they test and eventually develop your ability to lead in different situations.
Career shocks can occur, when you are:

Released from your company or you have to let people go
Promoted or passed over for a promotion
Assigned to a major transformation initiative or special project
Offered an [...]

I recently changed gyms, my old gym was a block away from my home but I had reached a point where I just didn’t feel excited or compelled to work out anymore. Which meant that on the odd occasion when I did go, I did not push myself and basically rushed through everything so I could leave as quickly as possible. I decided to try out a new gym, which is a 10-minute bus ride. The first couple of times I noticed an amazing energy, everyone was serious about their fitness, yes there is friendly banter but my goodness it feels like a high proportion of the gym members are [...]

Audi’s “Separation” commercial, starts with an Audi A4 showered with letters, which perhaps represent glowing praise. Suddenly we see a Mercedes C300 and a BMW 328 roll onto the scene, as the words “Slower. Smaller, Less fuel efficient”, float above. The ad ends with Audi racing over the finish line as the biggest, fastest most fuel efficient car in its class and the caption “Progress is Beautiful”.

With 96% recognition, Virgin is one of the best know brands not just in England, but worldwide. So just how does Virgin manage to keep it’s wining streak?

Knowing when and what to quit – a few months ago, I received an email from Sir Richard Branson, no less, informing me that they were reviewing the in-flight beauty therapy services.
